when you couple the notions of microgrids, with utilizing common methane digester technology for fuelling small gas-turbine systems like the Capstone, you begine to realize that decentralization makes sense at several levels economically. Principly the energy used in the transport of fuel in or waste material out of an area is reduced, this can be a net savings of up to 20% all by itself! The fact is that microgrids make sense in terms of reducing the vulnerability of our electrical infrastructure - as anyone who suffered thru the recent east coast blackouts could attest. The bigger issue is will government allow decentralization? And will they give the microgrids the same (or perhaps better) tax incentives that Public and Private Utility Companies receive? They should, it's in the best interests of our National Security to do so. Perhaps someone might alert the Homeland Security folks to this angle? ;)
